A no-luck kid, Carl Montclaire is heading home from school when he sees Porter Jackson, an Angel-in-Training, appear out of thin air. Porter, who moves into Carl’s house and pretends to be Carl’s distant cousin, reveals that he has been assigned the task of making Carl the most popular student at Bennett High. Porter’s first move is to enter Carl in a basketball shoot-out with Bennet High’s jock. Carl doesn’t have a chance.

Carl promises Alex that he’ll be his science lab partner only to ditch him for the ever-beautiful Brittany. When Carl refuses to admit to Porter that he partnered with Brittany for shallow reasons, Porter magically makes Brittany look totally hideous to Carl. In spite of this, Carl refuses to admit the truth but, with his rapidly deteriorating partnership and the constant presence of “ugly Brittany”, how long can he hold out? Meanwhile, Jane interviews Dr. Cassabi for the school newspaper and quizzes him on his background, only to discover Dr. Cassabi is hiding a big secret!

After Carl takes a pummeling in dodgeball, Porter gives Carl the ability to magically dodge anything, good or bad, including chores, homework, and his first kiss!

When a spot opens on the cheer squad, Porter uses his magic to make Carl an expert cheerleader and Carl quickly gets a spot on the team. With his newfound skills it’s not long before Carl wrests the squad spotlight from Brittany, the former star cheerleader, and she quickly hatches a plan to get him kicked off the team. Meanwhile, after Jane discovers the final chapter of her favourite book, “Cosmonaut Claire”, has been ripped out, she embarks on a quest to find out how the story ends. Dr. Cassabi helps out by bringing the author to meet Jane, but he must conceal the fact that the author’s been dead for twenty-five years!

When Mama B’s Pizzeria pulls sponsorship of the school volleyball team, Carl, Jane and Porter hold a talent show to raise funds for the squad. After discovering a hot new band to headline the show, the gang is confident the talent show will be a big hit. But when the band quits to go on tour, Porter offers Carl’s band as a substitute, even offering to be the lead singer himself. But Porter develops a nasty case of Angel Flu leaving Carl to front the band.

Porter magically helps Carl get a job at the coolest store in the mall but, before Carl can enjoy it, he's wearing a dress and on his way to the catwalk for the mall fashion show.
