DI John Major is killed on the job, leaving his partner Roy Carver and his wife Kelly bereft. One year later, Major makes a dramatic return, having been resurrected as part of an experimental artificial intelligence project.

Carver considers turning Major in after a serious error during an investigation, until he learns what the consequences will be.

Dennett gives Major and Carver a new assignment, but Major wants to stake out Kelly's work to learn if she's seeing someone else. Carver attempts to distract Major with the hunt for Major's killer.
