Despite graduating first in his class and requesting a post in Washington, new FBI agent Mike Warren is assigned to southern California to be trained in undercover operations by the enigmatic Paul Briggs.

Briggs and Mike tilt rival gangs against each other, and Mike learns that undercover life has moral complications.

Charlie meets with a CI who has details that could help take a major criminal off the street, but the informant's unpredictable behaviour almost blows the bust, and the trusting officer must reconsider her relationship.

While Mike trains Bello's men, despite Eddie's efforts to convince the mobster that the newcomer isn't what he seems, Jakes and Johnny go undercover on a drugs bust.

Mike becomes Bello's personal bodyguard. He also finds out why the FBI no longer trust Briggs, and works out a way to test his colleague's honesty.

Mike convinces Bello to steal from a drug cartel; Briggs helps Charlie cover up bad decisions.
