In Edinburgh, brothers Max and Jake kill an old man while driving home from a wedding. Stoned and uninsured, they hope Walter's death will be passed off as natural causes.
Max attempts to derail the private detective he hired to assuage the fears of Walter's niece, Angie. Walter's neighbour, Sheila, threatens Max and reveals that she witnessed something that night.
Angie and Jake's burgeoning relationship hits a problem when Jake grows suspicious, but Angie manages to explain away his worries.
Sheila claims ignorance when she finds out that Walter's real niece has contacted the solicitor. In order to protect his brother, Max orders Jake to leave the country as Angie promises to sort everything out.
Two gunshots ring out in an Edinburgh cellar and elsewhere, Max McCall is released from prison. These two events gradually come together as Max tries to rebuild his life, while new arrival Erin tries to save hers.
Max and Kenny find a local Minister more of an obstacle than they thought. Pressure builds for Erin, while Teddy is seeking answers.
