    Goals
It’s the beginning of pre season for brand new all-girl soccer team, Mustangs, and striker Marnie can’t wait to get started with her BFF, Liv. But the new team’s got problems. They have no uniforms, no dedicated change rooms, can barely field a team and their coach - Marnie’s mum, Jen - is clueless about the beautiful game. Things aren’t great at home for Marns either. Jen has got herself a new boyfriend - Kev - and Marnie is feeling the pain of sharing her space. Liv reckons they should get Danny to coach. He's the grumpy old Serbian guy that runs the local milk bar and he used to be a total football legend back in the day. Marnie and Liv go on a recruitment drive, signing up over scheduled Anusha - who might just be able to squeeze them in between cello, judo and advanced Farsi - and unsporty benchwarmer, Bella - who once claimed she had a period that lasted a term to get out of swimming. When it comes to match day, the Mustangs have the numbers and although things get off to a shaky start with the new players, Marnie scores a spectacular goal in the second half. Despite losing the game, the Mustangs celebrate - they have a team so they have a season. Game on! And Danny agrees to coach on the condition that Marnie helps out in his shop. Feels like things are looking up. Until Marnie realizes that Kev is moving in, and she has to share a room with his daughter, rhythmic gymnast and all round sparkly girl, Lara. Disaster!

    Like a Boss
Despite acquiring experienced new coach Danny, the Mustangs still have a long way to go. The girls run into conflict with Gabe and the boys over sharing the changing rooms and are given a sub-standard gravel pitch to play on. And when they get accused of “playing like girls”, it’s the last straw for Marnie. It’s time to fight back. After Marnie’s changing room sit-in fails miserably, Bella suggests that the way to beat the boys is to challenge them - they won’t be able to resist. So Marnie throws down the gauntlet and suggests a golden goal game against the boys team. If the girls win, they get change room equality, if they lose they must get changed in a tent. Game day and the girls defence is rock solid but don’t have the numbers to mount a serious attack. After half time, Ruby, a footballing hotshot from the US, offers to join the Mustangs and turns out to be a total gun. As the girls’ defend, they get the ball to Ruby and the Mustangs score. The ‘Stangs are thrilled but Ruby can’t quite work out why - their prize is a smelly old changing room with a dirty urinal.

    Can't Even
The Mustangs are looking forward to the first game of the season proper and Liv is apprehensive about her goalkeeping strategy. But Marnie’s got her own problems. Previously used to being the star, she’s increasingly jealous of new hotshot Ruby. And after the players’ kits finally arrive, Marnie draws unnecessary attention to her friend’s XXL-sized jersey and Liv gets upset and leaves. Nice one, Marns… not! Ruby visits Liv to see if she’s OK about the shirt disaster, reassuring her that it’s not about size, it’s about what your body can do, that counts. Ruby reveals that she is gay and the girls have a D & M, finding some common ground and talking goalie tactics in a way that Marnie's never had time for. With the first match getting closer, the bad vibe couldn’t have come at a worse time for Marnie. She knows she has to sort things out with her BFF but when she sees her bestie and Ruby chilling out together, she storms off before properly clearing the air with Liv - Ruby is totally stealing her friend as well as her position on the team. Game day and it’s a real nail-biter. A newly body confident Liv charges out of goal and manages to level the scores with a cracking finish. Marnie and Liv tentatively patch things up but it’s clear that Ruby has come between them.

    Game Changer
After losing a close and exhausting match, the Mustangs realise they must get fitter if they want to start winning. Marnie tries to work on her fitness at home but is distracted by Lara doing stretches and gymnastic moves outside with Jen. Angry and jealous, she finds Lara’s phone and posts an unflattering gif of her messing up a move. Marnie immediately feels bad but it’s too late - Lara’s revenge time bomb is definitely ticking… During fitness training, Marnie is surprised when Lara turns up to join. Is this part of Lara’s revenge? Marnie’s not so sure she likes Lara being around on and off the pitch but the rest of the team are adamant - Lara should totally play for the Mustangs this weekend. Bella pretends she’s actually been training when her Dad picks her up. But this time, she’s rumbled by Anusha, who is forced to help her out with the lie. Anusha is curious - what is it with this girl who doesn’t even want to try? Mustangs vs Magpies and the revenge time bomb finally explodes when Lara sabotages the team, frustrating Marnie to the point where she gets a red card. With Marnie on the bench, Ruby gives Lara an earful and they start working as a team. Lara uses her gymnastics prowess to score and Marnie is forced to watch the first Mustangs’ win from the sidelines. Back at home, Marnie and Lara forge an uneasy truce and Marnie invites Lara to play for the Mustangs permanently.

    Girl Crush
Bella is forced to play in a match but when her moment comes, things go horribly wrong and Danny sacks Bella from the Mustangs. To make matters worse, her dad says he’s coming to her next game and bringing the whole family in support. How is she going to hide the fact that she’s no longer even on the team? A curious Anusha visits Bella to try and get to know her a little more. It’s clear that she and Bella are from very different worlds - Anusha is busy with her over scheduled iCalendar, while Bella is quietly immersed in her pile of novels. Bella has been encouraged into soccer by her dad but it’s clear that it’s not sport she craves, but the connection and the camaraderie of friendship. Meantime, the connection between Ruby and Marnie is not exactly firing and Liv decides the best way to make them get on is to “accidentally” invite them both to a sleepover. But it seems some friendships can’t be forced. Bella blames Anusha for the predicament she’s in but when Nush suggests just wriggling out of the game like she usually does, Bella admits that this time, she doesn’t want to make an excuse. She wants to play. Pitch side before the game, Danny sees a new fire in Bella’s eyes and allows her on the field where - thanks to Anusha’ s support - she manages a killer header and actually participates. After the game, Danny gives Bella her jersey back. Not only is she now a real part of the Mustangs, she’s gained a friend in Anusha.

    Otp
The girls play a mixed futsal match with the boys and hormones are raging. Now that Liv and Hamit, (of the Mustangs boys team) are officially an item, romance is in the air and Willow lets slip that she thinks Marnie and Gabe are OTP - one true pairing. But Marnie either can’t see it or won’t admit it. She can't imagine kissing Gabe... can she? Determined to move the budding romance forward, Lara organises a party. The gang arrives, dressed up and full of expectation, apart from Marns, who is just full of mouthwash and toothpaste to make sure her breath is minty fresh. Anusha’s set one of targets about kissing at the party but not only does she get knocked back, she realises that Bella has managed to sneak a kiss before her. What’s that all about? Meantime, Marnie and Gabe are clearly feeling the pressure of the moment and after a few toe curling attempts, only manage a near miss of a first kiss before falling off the trampoline. Awk-ward! The morning after and Marnie feels like she has to let Gabe down gently. If she was going to kiss anyone, it would be him. But she’s just not ready for this boyfriend/girlfriend stuff. Marnie is content being best mates.
