Three nurses volunteer to work in a tented field hospital in France during World War I.

Sister Margaret worries that the volunteers are not ready for the convoy of new patients descending on the hospital.

Paranoia is rife as the hospital anticipates the court martial of a patient; Thomas's pioneering wound irrigation system brings him head-to-head with a senior officer; also, a chance meeting presents Joan with a dangerous opportunity.

The arrival of soldiers from her hometown lifts Joan's spirits; Thomas pursues Kitty; loyalties are questioned when an old patient returns.

Grace recalls her time in India as she's called to tend to a hostile colonel who is desperate to return to the front; Flora decides it's time for a concert, and Joan risks everything in the hope of a letter from her fiancé.
