The Palace

In 1988, Marlene from West Germany visits Berlin, the capital of the GDR. She can't believe her eyes when she sees Christine, who looks just like her, dancing on the stage of the Friedrichstadt-Palast.

When Marlene learns that her mum is in the hospital, she convinces Christine to switch identities. Marlene will finally meet her mother and Christine must go to Bavaria as Marlene to see the father.

Christine crosses the heavily guarded inner-German border with her sister's passport; Marlene gets emotional when she meets her mother but keeps the secret safe; Roland is confronted with the past and the lie he has hidden for almost 30 years.

Marlene is thrown out of the Palace and gets Christine's solo cancelled; Christine gets into an argument with her father and decides to return home, but gets detained at the border.

In the Pankow apartment house, the grandparents, the mother and her daughters all get together; the government threaten to stop the rehearsals at the Friedrichtstadt-Palast; Marlene moves to West Berlin to live near her mother and sister.

Christine and Marlene get into a fight; the mood in the GDR begins to change and people are calling for reforms; the GDR authorities learn that the twins have repeatedly exchanged passports and identities.
