Plans for the approaching May Day Fair are underway in the village but everything is not as peaceful as it might be in the Larkins’ world. With the arrival of the tax man, things are looking bleak for The Larkins.

While Mariette's heart is being pulled in many directions, love must take a back seat as the Larkins convince Charley that they don’t need to sell the farm to pay their back tax.

Worried that Pop is working too hard, Ma books a weekend in Margate. Charley and Mariette are left to mind the kids and sort out the new TV aerial, which is being delivered by the wily Wilf.

Pop takes action when local trainspotter Kate Farley tells him the train station is about to close.

Ma is beside herself and cleaning like a demon with the imminent arrival of her sister, Bertha, who isn't very fond of the country.
