Barcelona, 2020. Two agents of the Criminal Investigation Unit, Marga Muñoz, and Quique Molina, at odds with each other, join forces to investigate a string of murders of homeless men. Their main suspect is "The Bastard," an aggressive beggar who sows terror among the rest of the homeless population with whom the victim argued a few days earlier. Despite the opposition from Muñoz, Sergeant Molina, fraught with his issues, arrests "The Bastard." Meanwhile, Inspector Quim Vilana has to take in their son Max at the request of his ex-wife, Dutch physician Ingrid Maertens, who is ill with COVID-19. Max, a gifted teenager who has spent most of his life in boarding schools, has barely seen Vilana. But when Max, a somewhat childish, obedient, and shy boy, meets his rebellious neighbor, Rebeca, everything changes.

Imad Massoud, a young North African man, is found beaten to death next to the Auditori de Barcelona by his fellow vagrants. Jonas, a French street musician who had befriended Imad, tells the police that "The Bastard" had previously threatened Imad for snitching. With the evidence increasingly pointing towards "The Bastard," he flees. Not wanting to rush this time, the police decide to confirm the identity of the perpetrator of the second murder by checking the subway security cameras. In the meantime, another of Imad's fellow homeless men searches for "The Bastard," seeking vengeance. But when a home video of the murder gets broadcast, everything changes in the investigation. Meanwhile, Max and his mysterious neighbor, Rebeca, find a way to spend lockdown together.

Allende, a homeless woman and "The Bastard" partner, finds him injured after Chamorro's attack. Transferred to an ICU, "The Bastard" straddles between life and death. Meanwhile, Pazos tries to take "The Bastard's" place as Allende seeks refuge elsewhere. Street musician Jonas Jankauskas reproaches Chamorro for what he has done to "The Bastard." Though regretful for his actions, he also fears "The Bastard's" reprisal. Molina and Muñoz investigate the death of Imad Massoud and the attacker of "The Bastard," a third homeless man is found murdered. When journalist Judith Hoffman raises the question of a potential serial killer at work, the police try to deflect, trying to avoid creating a state of panic. Meanwhile, Inspector Vilana, overwhelmed by work overload, stops going to the house to see his son, Max, who spends all his time with his neighbor Rebeca and decides to listen to her and skip lockdown.

While the Mossos d'Esquadra denies the existence of a serial killer, the Criminal Investigation Unit works in the background to catch the elusive killer: Operation Sleepers. Sergeant Molina is one of the volunteers to infiltrate the homeless to carry out surveillance undetected. Elena, his wife, fearing that he might infect her and the child with COVID-19, refuses him entry into his own home, undermining his health and, more importantly, morale. Molina becomes obsessed with the idea that Elena has an affair with her boss which causes Molina to lose his mind. On the other hand, the police ask the homeless to sleep in groups. Chamorro, Jonas, and other homeless people set up a makeshift camp, which has been joined by, among others, Allende, "The Bastard's" partner. But when cohabitation problems arise with Chamorro, Jonas abandons the protection of the group. Meanwhile, Max feels hurt after Vilana slaps him, drawing a bleak conclusion.

Advised by her godfather, Quim Vilana, Elena files a domestic violence complaint against her husband, accepting an offer to take refuge with her daughter in a beautiful isolated cottage owned by Vilana's friends. She starts feeling uncomfortable when she discovers her godfather's true intentions. When the judge issues a restraining order against Molina for gender violence, Vilana removes him from the case. As Molina becomes reclusive, Marga Muñoz reluctantly takes him into her home until he finds a place to go, initiating a tense and complex coexistence. While packing his belongings, Molina discovers something that leads him to think that Elena is having an affair with her boss. Meanwhile, street musician Jonas takes Chamorro's harsh words to heart and, despite Chamorro's apology, decides it's time to make peace with his family and go home. After several days of inactivity, the killer of homeless people roams the streets of Barcelona, looking for new prey.

Alerted by people, the police locked down the location of the serial killer near where the musician Jonas Jankauskas was found dead. Muñoz immediately sets up an operation to prevent him from escaping. Despite being removed from the case and against Muñoz's advice, Sergeant Molina joins a frantic hunt through the streets of a ghostly Barcelona to catch the serial killer. As the hunt begins, Muñoz receives disconcerting information and discovers who took and sent the photos that sunk her career and destroyed Molina's marriage. Taking advantage of Vilana's absence, Max and Rebeca skip the lockdown disguised as delivery staff to ride their bikes through the empty city without being stopped by the police. However, this time, their lockdown escapades don't go their way.
