Le familistère de Guise est l'ancêtre du logement social. L'habitat communautaire est pour Jean-Baptiste André Godin, le concepteur, l'architecte, le constructeur et le propriétaire du bâtiment, la pierre angulaire d'une société nouvelle... Dans la première moitié du XIXème siècle, la révolution industrielle attire une population nombreuse dans des villes où rien n'est prévu pour l'accueillir. Les premières habitations ouvrières sont construites sur le modèle de la maison individuelle. Les industriels, même les plus éclairés, redoutent l'habitat collectif : rassembler la masse des ouvriers dans des logements communs reviendrait à créer des foyers insurrectionnels en ces temps d'agitation révolutionnaire. Le familistère de Guise fait fi de ces réticences : un seul bâtiment de 450 mètres de développement, élevé d'un rez-de-chaussée, de trois étages et de combles accessibles par seize escaliers collectifs qui desservent des appartements destinés à loger 1 500 personnes - l'équivalent de 300 maisons individuelles.
