On a dark night on the wild Scottish borders, a man convicted of the brutal murder of his wife and daughter escapes from a speeding train. Beginning his search for the truth and to clear his name, he goes to see an aging Mafia don.

Byrne continues to pursue the mob to get to the truth. The nationwide manhunt for him is stepped up, and he realises that the intelligence services have cut him loose. Byrne has a near miss with death and realises his home is unsafe.

With his pursuers closing in, Byrne finds an empty house in which to lie low and alter his appearance. While his nightmarish flashbacks grow worse, Byrne is desperate to get hold of a copy of Patagonia as he knows the codes are of vital importance.

Byrne realises the odds are against him, as he still cannot manage to break Patagonia's codes despite using them to strike back at the mob. Lured into Connor's reach, he is caught in a trap and finally learns the awful truth.
