In 1968, Ruth and Paul Bowen live at remote house Marchlands with Paul's parents Robert and Evelyn. Ruth and Paul's daughter Alice recently drowned and Ruth is finding it impossible to move on - while Paul has issues of his own. In 1987, Helen and Eddie Maynard try to ignore their daughter Amy's 'imaginary friend' Alice, until Amy reveals that Alice is dead. Helen begins to worry about her daughter - is Alice's presence benign? In 2010, Mark Ashburn returns to the village with his pregnant partner Nisha Parekh. While Nisha is stripping wallpaper in the house, she finds a photo of Alice - and not long afterwards, she is injured falling off a ladder. Later, Nisha meets an old friend of Mark's, and begins to suspect that Mark is not being entirely truthful with her.
