Peacemaker

During her speech in a United Nations Security Council meeting, Ann-Mari Sundell reveals that the State of Finland is selling weapons to Saudi Arabia, a country which is at war with Yemen. This causes a scandal, and for a while it looks like Ann-Mari’s career as a peace negotiator has come to an end. However, the General Secretary of the United Nations, Theo Slobo, offers her a way out; Ann-Mari needs to negotiate the peace terms between Turkey and the Kurds. Ann-Mari gathers her team and heads to Turkey, where she has to confront both war crimes and the old wounds of her past.

Ann-Mari is tasked by the United Nations to negotiate peace during a conflict between the Kurds and Turkey, and finds herself in the middle of a political power play.

With Diyar’s help, Ann-Mari manages to arrange a secret meeting with the Kurdish leader Binav Bashur, who is in exile. The meeting does not go according to plan, however, because the information about the secret meeting place is revealed. Ann-Mari does not know who is behind the attack and who has leaked the information about the meeting. Ann-Mari’s situation grows even more difficult when Theo arrives in Istanbul and squeezes Ann-Mari out of the peace negotiations. Ann-Mari sees Theo as her friend, but is Theo turning his back on her?

Binav Bashur’s death causes a political chaos, and the persecution of Kurds begins in Istanbul. Diyar’s Kurdish contacts are in danger. Ann-Mari and her team are deported from the country. Before she leaves, Ann-Mari meets her mother in the Lutheran church of Istanbul and has to face her painful memories. The wounds of her past have not yet healed. Emilia receives a mysterious message from her old friend in Spain. The weapons Finland has sold have ended up in Málaga instead of Saudi Arabia. Ann-Mari needs to act and find the weapons before they fall into the wrong hands. To Ann-Mari’s shock, Diyar is detained and not allowed to leave the country.

Diyar is accused of spreading propaganda against the Turkish government. He is detained in Istanbul, and Theo takes advantage of his status in order to get Diyar released. Without Theo’s knowledge, Ann-Mari and Emilia travel to Spain to meet Emilia’s contact, Asier Garcia, who believes he knows what has happened to the stolen Finnish weapons. Tom finds out that a man unknown to the intelligence service, Zamen Essayah, has captured the weapons. There is an explosion at the Alhambra fortress. Who is behind the attack

Ann-Mari reveals to the Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs Oskar Rantala that Alhambra might have been captured using Finnish weapons. The worst imaginable threat might have already become reality. Oskar wants to hide the information from the public. Ann-Mari finds out that Oskar has hired Tom as Ann-Mari’s security man in order to get information about Ann-Mari’s actions. Ann-Mari demands that Tom pick his side. To Ann-Mari’s surprise, the man who captured Alhambra, Zamen Essayah, wants to meet with her. Zamen wants to send a message to the whole Europe. Ann-Mari prepares for the negotiations that will take place in the captured fortress. She is about to enter negotiations that might cost her her own life.
