So Awkward

`Wear your own clothes' day at school is approaching and Lily is anxious not to look like a dork as they usually do in Jas's homemade and uncool, geeky T-shirts.

While other girls are going to parties, netball practice and sleepovers, the inseparable trio are busy with chess club, homework and Friday nights in watching documentaries. Martha feels ignored by her workaholic mother so Jas helps her to rebel to get noticed.

Lily, Martha and Jas are smart but socially awkward 13-year-old girls trying to make sense of life, boys and fitting in. Martha is mortified when she gets a lowly A minus for her latest history assignment. She decides to frantically swot, but is so exhausted her grades threaten to slip even further. Head teacher Mrs Griggs decides that what Martha needs is to learn to lighten up and have fun and so she assigns Matt Furnish as Martha's 'funness' tutor.

Martha's mother buys three tickets to an upcoming science talk to be given by famous, drop-dead gorgeous science presenter, Dr Simon Nox. Martha and her mum are going, but the question is, who gets the third, precious ticket?

Jas is excited to be playing Juliet in a scene from Romeo and Juliet to be performed in a school assembly, even though she's incapable of sticking to the script and getting the lines right! When Jas gets sick, director Ollie tries to persuade Lily to take Jas's part. Lily doesn't want to steal the role from her friend, but can't resist the chance to act opposite Matt.

When Lily starts to worry that she and Matt Furnish might be incompatible, Jas suggests adapting the plant species comparison software they are using in class to assess the compatibility of humans. She calls it the Love Machine.
