Ruth Gruber was a Brooklyn Jew who escorted a group of Jewish refugees back into the United States in 1944. She travelled to Italy to rescue 1,000 Jews who had been invited to America by President Roosevelt. Once on US soil, however, the Jews were detained in a camp on the orders of the government.
