Seiji and Oko receive a request from a noble samurai to find a lost precious item that he believes to be a tsukumogami, an object become imbued with spirits.
A well-known antique art dealer stops by the shop seeking their assistance; the old man claims that the paintings on his hanging scrolls change every night, and he asks Oko and Seiji for help figuring out why.
Oko visits the Hachiya estate and learns that Katsusaburo's fiancée, Sanae, is unhappy because the upcoming wedding has caused her mother to pressure her into being more dignified; Oko and Seiji try to fix the rift between mother and daughter.
The young master of the Omi-ya kimono shop, Kounosuke, is rumoured to be a tricky, stylish playboy, and Seiji is concerned about Oko falling for him; so, to expose him, Seiji asks a friend to bring a tsukumogami to a party with Kounosuke to uncover the truth behind the playboy.
According to rumours, a chivalrous bandit called Itachi Kozo has been listening to the wishes of those at a particular shrine then granting them.
Kounosuke falls into a river and accidentally pulls Seiji in, causing a precious seal box that has been in the family for generations to be lost; they look for it for a while with no luck; then a man shows up with it and demands a hefty reward.
