Dar, an orphaned prince who can communicate with animals, befriends a prisoner named Tao, and the two head out to rescue Dar's love, Kyra, who has been kidnapped by Terron Warriors.
Dar and Tao rescue a man named Akili from a group of Terron warriors. But then Dar learns that Akili is also a Terron. He explains that he was banished by the brutal group of warriors because he fell in love with a member of King Zad's harem.
Tao decides that it's time for him to leave the security of Dar's compound. As he unravels a cloth map, a jade ring falls out. This ring is a badge of Tao's people, the Eiron, and is only worn by the scholars of the tribe.
With the help of some wolves, Kyra manages to escape from Zad and the Terron camp and briefly reunites with Dar. But the Sorceress has other plans for the couple. After Kyra and Dar are reunited, the Sorceress casts a spell on her.
Dar and his companions risk their lives for a stranger when they enter the valley of the Amazons in search of an antidote for a snake's venom. The valley is home to a tribe of beautiful warrior women.
Dar discovers he has a bizarre connection to the deadly Curupira , the protector of animals, who kills any human who takes more than he or she needs from nature. This demon has promised to protect Dar and give him the powers of the BeastMaster.
