Hero Ships

The story of these ships is one of an unsung hero, as it reveals not just the considerable war-long battle action of one ship, but exemplifies the collective saga of a design class that had absolutely no military precedent before June of 1942.

The Jeremiah O'Brien was in the thick of it all the way. She holds the unique distinction of being not only the last remaining, unaltered Liberty Ship afloat, but also the last remaining fully operational ship to participate in the D-day invasion.

The first USS Samuel B. Roberts fought doggedly against a superior Japanese fleet until being sunk during World War II; the name Samuel B. Roberts has appeared two more times, including a ship launched in 1984 that participated in Desert Storm.

The USS Constitution serves as a training facility for the Navy's CPO.

Eight U.S. Navy ships have held the name Enterprise, but none as significant as the last two.

Among the most notable battleships in the Navy's history is the USS New Jersey. Her keel was laid at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1940, and the hull was launched on December 7, 1942.
