Inger Johanne Vik has been working as a profiler for the FBI but is now back in Sweden with her two daughters, having decided to prioritise her children above her work, when her oldest daughter Stina, diagnosed with autism, witnesses a brutal murder.

Inger Johanne is beginning to realise what her daughter has been through. Ingvar goes to Uppsala to investigate the murder of bishop Elisabeth Lindgren, which took place late at Christmas eve. It's obvious that the secret dwells in Uppsala.

After long hesitation, Inger Johanne agrees to be a part of the investigation. At the same time she is trying to understand how the information she gets from her daughter comes together; are the murders related? Rolf suspects that his husband is having an affair and plans a way to expose him.

When Lennart Carlsson is taken in for questioning by the police Inger Johanne realises a connection between her private life and Carlsson. How is her family connected to the investigation? Erik pays a visit to the woman in the photograph. Inger Johanne discovers a connection between the murders.

Ingvar finds a trail that supports Inger Johanne´s theory about the motive for the murders. Inger Johanne remembers something from her time at FBI which seems to have something to do with the case; maybe the FBI can help her understand the connection. The bishop´s son comes to Ingvar to share a suspicion.
