Aleppo, Syria

Little Dounia enjoys peaceful days with her grandparents in her hometown of Aleppo. She braids cheese with her grandmother, plays with her little bird, and runs errands in the souk. Dounia discovers the so-called magical properties of the baraké seed. Life seems calm in Aleppo, but a war is brewing.

The War

Fears of war coming to Aleppo were justified. When the bombs fall on the city and destroy everything that Dounia's family had, all they can do is leave, abandoning everything behind.

The Road

Dounia and her grandparents take to the road to Turkey. It is the first milestone of a long journey. They have to walk to the border crossing and face guards who are not very sensitive to their cause. But Dounia has in her pocket everything it takes to overcome the greatest obstacles.

The Sea

Dounia and the other travelers head towards Izmir and then to the coast. There, a smuggler will take them across the sea to Greece. But the wind is rising and the sea is stirring. Dounia then uses one of her baraké seeds to get through this ordeal.

The Border

Dounia's journey is halted at the Macedonian border. The makeshift camp where Dounia and her grandparents settle is populated by people like them, who are fleeing the war. It is through music, dance, and the baraké seed of Dounia, that the guards' cold hearts warm up and opens the border.

Dounia and the group arrive in Hungary. From there, they will take the train to their new country. But Dounia's family is separated from the group. Stuck in Budapest, Dounia and her grandparents still dream of a new home. Thanks to one of Dounia's baraké seeds, something magical happens.
