Quando il magnate dell'editoria Bradford Meade passa le redini del suo magazine di moda, "Mode", a suo figlio Daniel, assume Betty come nuova assistente, più che altro perché è l'unica donna a New York con la quale Daniel non andrebbe mai a letto. All'inizio Daniel la respinge, ma Betty riesce a conquistarlo con la sua intelligenza ed efficienza. Nessuno di loro conosce le insidie del mondo della moda, ma sono una coppia formidabile contro gli squali dagli abiti firmati che farebbero qualsiasi cosa pur di mandarli in fallimento.
