덴분 13년(1544) 도토미국 이이노야. 후에 이이 나오토라라는 용감한 남자 이름으로 전국시대를 살아가는 소녀 오토와는 이이 가문의 당주인 아버지 나오모리와 어머니 치카 밑에서 행복한 나날을 보내고 있었다. 말괄량이 오토와의 놀이 상대는 소꿉친구인 카메노죠와 츠루마루. 어느 날 오토와에게 카메노죠와의 혼담이 들어온다. 당주 자리를 이을 생각이었던 오토와는 처음에 당황하지만, 이윽고 카메노죠의 아내로서 이이 가문을 지탱하기로 마음먹는다. 그러던 중 카메노죠의 아버지 이이 나오미쓰가 주군인 이마가와 요시모토에 대한 역모 혐의를 받고 슨푸로 불려가게 된다.
