On the first day of his new job, DCI Tom Mathias is called to investigate the suspicious disappearance of Helen Jenkins from her bungalow.

The body of a young man is uncovered, in the murky depths of a quarry lake, in the isolated village of Penwyllt. His identity and the nature of his death are unknown.

The body of a young woman is found abandoned but carefully placed in the marshlands, pushing DCI Mathias to the edge personally and professionally.

Mathias finds himself under investigation by the IPCC following the death of Mari Davies. An unusual murder weapon leads to a family touched by a drug-related tragedy.
