Senior registrar Kate Dickenson has a busy day ahead of her. First, her stepson arrives at her family's house unannounced. Then, in a stressful morning at work, she organizes a hospice wedding and contends with a complicated citizenship case, before sparring with her colleague Judy over a promotion.

Kate's colleague Jamie takes the next step in her gender transition, and Kate faces a harassment complaint from the translator in the immigration case. After an argument about her phone, Kate's daughter, Lucy, is caught skipping school.

Kate and Rob frantically search for Lucy and make a surprising discovery. Judy follows through on her threat to send the compromising video of Kate and Rick to the whole staff, and Kate worries about Rob finding out.

As Rob deals with the discovery of another body, Kate finds a memory stick with the compromising video in Rob's bag, but she isn't sure if he's seen it. Kate’s staff works with the police as they prepare to ambush the sham wedding.

Kate and Rob plan to register their intention to marry, but Rick's girlfriend, Olivia, ambushes Kate at the office and threatens to tell Rob about the video. Rob makes headway in the sham wedding case.

Kate finally tells Rob everything after he finds the photographs of her and Rick, and Rob storms off, leaving Kate alone with the kids. As Rick prepares to interview for another job, Kate must make a difficult decision.
